How Many Laser Sessions Do You Actually Need?

The honest, body-by-body breakdown — because “it depends” isn't a real answer.

"How many sessions will I actually need?" is the first question almost every client asks at their free consultation — and the honest answer is that it depends on where on your body you're treating, not just a flat number. Here's the real, body-by-body breakdown our technicians use to set expectations before you ever sit in the chair.

Quick Facts

Why it takes more than one visit: Hair grows in cycles, and laser only destroys hair that's actively growing — at any given time, only 20–30% of your hair is in that phase

General range: 6–8 sessions for most body areas, spaced 4–6 weeks apart

Fastest area to clear: Underarms & bikini — dense hair with a short growth cycle

Slowest area to clear: Face, chin & upper lip — hormonally-driven hair often needs 8–12 sessions

Full timeline: 6–10 months from your first session to your final touch-up

Pricing at ALP: Full-body laser hair removal starts at $180 per session

Why You Can't Clear Everything in One Session

Hair doesn't all grow at once — it cycles through three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting/shedding). Laser can only damage a follicle while its hair is in the anagen phase, because that's the only time the follicle is connected to enough pigment-rich hair for the laser to lock onto. At any given moment, only a fraction of the hair on any part of your body is in that active phase — the rest is dormant and invisible to the laser.

That's the entire reason multiple sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart exist: each visit catches a fresh batch of hairs as they enter their growth phase. Skip a session or go too early, and you're either missing hairs that haven't cycled in yet or re-treating skin that has nothing new to target.

Session Count by Body Area

These are the ranges our Dearborn Heights team plans around for most clients. Your exact number depends on hair density, hair color, and any hormonal factors — we'll give you a personalized estimate at your free consultation.

Body AreaTypical SessionsSpacingWhy
Underarms6–84–5 weeksDense hair with a fast, predictable growth cycle — usually clears the most reliably
Bikini / Brazilian6–84–5 weeksCoarse, dark hair responds very well to laser
Full Legs7–95–6 weeksLarger surface area with mixed hair thickness can add a session or two
Arms6–85–6 weeksFiner hair in some spots can take slightly longer to fully clear
Back / Chest8–105–6 weeksOften hormonally-influenced and coarser than other areas
Face, Chin & Upper Lip8–124–5 weeksFacial hair is strongly hormone-driven, making it the most session-intensive area

What Actually Happens at Each Session

Results build progressively, not instantly. Expect visibly less regrowth after each session rather than a dramatic before-and-after from one visit. Hair that does grow back between sessions is typically finer and lighter than before treatment started — that's a sign the laser is working, even if the area isn't fully clear yet.

Do You Need Touch-Ups After Your Full Course?

Most clients maintain their results with one or two touch-up sessions per year, especially for hormonally-active areas like the chin or upper lip. This isn't a sign the treatment "didn't work" — a small percentage of follicles can reactivate over time in anyone, and a quick annual touch-up keeps you at your smoothest.

What Can Slow Down Your Timeline

Frequently Asked Questions

Most clients notice visible thinning after their second or third session, once enough hair has cycled through the growth phase to show a real difference. Full results build gradually across the full course.
No — and this is the most common mistake we see. Going in too early means the laser is treating skin where most hair is still resting or shedding, not growing. You'll waste a session and see less reduction, not more.
Facial hair — chin, upper lip, jawline — is strongly influenced by hormones, which means new hairs can activate on a different schedule than body hair. That's why we typically plan 8–12 sessions for facial areas versus 6–8 for legs or underarms.
Laser targets pigment, so tanned or sunburned skin raises the risk of burns and pigment changes, and we may need to push your appointment back until your skin tone returns to baseline. Sunscreen on treated areas between sessions keeps your timeline on track.
Laser hair removal is classified by the FDA as permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal — most clients see 80–95% reduction after a full course, with a small number of finer or lighter regrowth hairs remaining. A touch-up session once or twice a year is normal and keeps you smooth long-term.
