Expert Q&A
Our team at American Laser Plus in Dearborn Heights has performed thousands of laser hair removal sessions. These are the 20 questions we get asked most — answered honestly, without the marketing fluff.
Most clients describe it as a rubber band snap or a light stinging sensation. Modern diode lasers with integrated cooling have made the experience significantly more comfortable than older systems. Sensitive areas like the bikini line feel more intense; legs and arms are very tolerable for most people.
Most clients need 6–8 sessions for 80–95% permanent reduction. Sessions are spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Some clients with hormonal conditions need maintenance sessions annually.
Laser hair removal is FDA-classified as providing "permanent reduction." Most clients achieve 80–95% permanent reduction. A small percentage of fine or light hairs may return over time, and maintenance sessions may be needed every 1–2 years for hormonal hair.
Yes — with modern diode lasers and an experienced technician. Older IPL or Alexandrite devices posed risks for dark skin. Our diode laser system is safe and effective for Fitzpatrick types I–VI including dark and olive complexions.
Yes — shaving is fine and actually encouraged between sessions. Do not wax, thread, or pluck as these remove the hair root that the laser targets.
Virtually anywhere on the body: face (upper lip, chin, sideburns), underarms, arms, legs, bikini, Brazilian, back, shoulders, and stomach. We treat every area at American Laser Plus.
No. We do not treat clients who are pregnant. Laser hair removal is safe to resume after pregnancy and breastfeeding — the wait is worth it.
Tanning increases skin pigmentation which raises the risk of burns or pigmentation changes. We'll need to postpone your session if you have a fresh tan. Avoid tanning throughout your treatment course for best and safest results.
Small areas like the upper lip take 5–10 minutes. Underarms and bikini line take 15–20 minutes. Full legs take 30–45 minutes. A full body session takes 60–90 minutes.
Some medications increase photosensitivity — including certain antibiotics (doxycycline), acne medications (Accutane — must be off for 6 months before treatment), and some antidepressants. Always disclose all medications during your consultation.
